2. Purpose

This website provides real-time visualizations of lightning detections and sensor network data. All processed data are technical and anonymized. No user registration or tracking is used.

3. Data we process (non-personal)

Lightning events (“strikes”): timestamps, distance estimates, anonymized geographic coordinates.
Heartbeat telemetry: device status such as temperature, humidity, signal strength (RSSI), uptime, firmware version, and—if available—GPS coordinates.

All lightning and heartbeat data are stored in anonymized form and cannot be linked to identifiable individuals. Device identifiers are used only for technical correlation and do not permit personal identification.

4. Legal basis

Article 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interests) and UK Data Protection Act 2018. The legitimate interest is the secure operation and improvement of a global lightning detection network.

5. Server logs

When accessing the site, the hosting provider (IONOS) processes technical logs (e.g., IP address, timestamp, user agent) for security and troubleshooting. IPs are anonymized or deleted after a short retention period.

6. Cookies & analytics

No analytics, advertising or social tracking. Only technically necessary cookies may be used to ensure basic functionality; no profiling is performed.

7. Sharing

No data sharing with third parties, except hosting by IONOS or where required by law.

8. Retention

Anonymized lightning and heartbeat datasets may be retained for research and statistics as they contain no personal data. Server logs are automatically purged after a short technical retention period.

9. Your rights

Under GDPR/UK DPA you may have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, and objection. As we do not store personal data, these rights generally do not apply. You can contact us at info@hoong.de with any questions.
